Four Gears

Which business processes should not be automated?

A process should not be automated when the inputs are unreliable, the decision requires accountable human judgement, failures would cause disproportionate harm, or the process itself has not yet been understood.

Automation amplifies the process it is given. If the underlying process is confused, the result is faster confusion.

High-impact decisions involving money, rights, safety, reputation or sensitive relationships usually require explicit human authority.

A useful design separates deterministic steps, probabilistic AI assistance and decisions that must remain with a person.

Nobody agrees on the current process

Exceptions are more common than the normal path

A wrong action would be difficult to reverse

The proposed system needs unrestricted access to work
