Google Business Profile Setup Guide for Belfast Businesses

A step-by-step guide to setting up and optimising your Google Business Profile to appear in local search results across Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Why Your Google Business Profile Matters

For many local searches in Belfast, Google may show map results prominently. The information in those results comes from Google Business Profiles and other signals.

An accurate, verified profile helps eligible businesses present useful information in Google Search and Maps. It does not guarantee a particular ranking or volume of enquiries.

Step 1: Claim Your Profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If it already exists (Google often creates profiles automatically from public data), claim it. If it doesn't exist, create a new one.

Google may require verification and decides which verification methods are available for a profile. Follow the method shown in the profile manager and keep the submitted business details accurate.

Step 2: Fill In Every Single Field

Complete every field that accurately applies to the business:

Business name: Use the real-world name your business uses on signage and customer materials. Avoid adding promotional keywords; follow Google's business-name guidelines.

Address: Must match your website exactly. Same format, same postcode

Phone number: Use a local Belfast number if possible (028 prefix). Match it exactly to your website

Website: Link to your homepage

Business hours: Keep these accurate, including bank holidays

Business category: Choose the most specific primary category available. You can add up to 10 additional categories

Business description: 750 characters to describe what you do. Write naturally — include your location and services but don't keyword stuff

Services: List every service you offer with descriptions

Step 3: Add Photos (Lots of Them)

Current photos help customers recognise your business and understand what you offer. Add:

Your business exterior (helps customers recognise you)

Interior photos

Team photos (people trust people)

Photos of your work (before/after, completed projects)

Your logo and a cover photo

Add clear, current images that genuinely represent the business and update them when the premises, team or work changes.

Step 4: Get Reviews (And Respond to Every One)

Genuine reviews can help prospective customers understand the experience a business provides. Ask consistently and follow the platform's review policies:

Ask every happy customer. Most people are willing to leave a review if you ask — they just don't think of it on their own

Make it easy. Create a direct review link (Google "Google review link generator") and share it via text or email after completing a job

Respond to every review — thank positive reviewers by name, and address negative reviews professionally

Do not buy or fabricate reviews. They breach platform policies and can expose the profile and the business to enforcement or reputational harm

Step 5: Post Regular Updates

Where the Posts feature is available, it can be used to share current business information:

Share offers and promotions

Announce new services

Post project completions with photos

Share helpful tips related to your industry

Publish only when there is something accurate and useful to communicate, and keep time-sensitive offers and details current.

Step 6: Use the Q&A Section

If a Q&A feature is available on your profile, monitor it for genuine customer questions and answer accurately. Features can vary by business and may change over time.

Common Belfast-Specific Tips

Service area businesses: If you travel to customers (plumbers, electricians, cleaners), set up a service area instead of showing your address. You can target specific Belfast postcodes and surrounding areas

Multiple locations: If you serve both Belfast and Lisburn (for example), create separate profiles for each location — but only if you have a genuine physical presence in each area

Northern Ireland categories: Some business types in NI have different naming conventions. Make sure your category matches what local customers would search for

Monitoring Your Results

Google Business Profile has built-in analytics showing:

How many people saw your profile

How many called, visited your website, or requested directions

What search terms people used to find you

Check the available performance information regularly and compare it with calls, website visits and enquiries. Treat any change as a prompt to investigate rather than proof of a single cause.
